Kajiado County government has suspended all land transactions for six months as it streamlines the handling of transfers.
Governor David Nkedianye said the county was working with the National Land Commission to make land deals less cumbersome.
“We are doing this to set the rules right for the benefit of all acquiring land in the county,” said Dr Nkedianye, adding that the county would assist investors who had started the process of acquiring land.
County assembly members passed a motion to stop land transactions, blaming the lands office for delays in implementing structures provided for in the Constitution.
“The cabinet, in line with the motion approved by the county assembly, has suspended land transactions for six months across Kajiado County pending the establishment of the county land management board alongside other land policies in consultation with the National Land Commission,” the notice signed by the executive member for land, physical planning, environment, wildlife and natural resources,Richard Parsitau, read.
Consents for subdivision, transfers by land control boards, numbering of new subdivided parcels by the district surveyor, allocation of new plots and subdivision are among activities that have been suspended.
Land has been a source of conflict in the county with middlemen sometimes selling land without the consent of owners.
The suspension will affect the satellite towns of Nairobi City such as Kajiado, Kitengela, Ongata Rongai, Isinya and Ngong.
However, Kitengela-based real estate businessman David Parseina warned the move would scare away investors.
“Suspending land activities for the next six months is ill-advised since the Land Control Act is yet to be repealed,” said Mr Parseina.
